OAC SHARES STATEMENT ON FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR AIR CANADA
Toronto (Ontario), April 13, 2021
Moira Harvey, Executive Director of the Ontario Aerospace Council (OAC), supports the statement made by the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) further to the announcement of the financial support for Air Canada made by Canada's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland and Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra on April 12, 2021.
"OAC is pleased to hear that the federal government will be providing financial relief to our Canadian airline sector which will help support the airlines, their employees and their customers through the major difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 global pandemic."
“We echo the statement from AIAC, this is a good first step towards supporting our industry, however an Aerospace Sector Strategy is still needed to ensure manufacturing, engineering, innovation, investments, and jobs in Canada are not only protected but continue to thrive in an ultra-competitive post-COVID global marketplace."
“It is critical that we are able retain our highly-skilled workforce which is vital to our global competitiveness and the innovation needed to remain at the forefront of the digital and sustainable shift in the industry. We need talent to remain in Canada to tackle the new-age of green aviation which will see electrification, sustainable fuels, and advanced materials development as we move towards net zero emission targets in the coming years."
“Jurisdictions around the world are investing heavily in their national and regional aerospace industries whilst all supporting their nations through the pandemic. Canada cannot afford not to invest in its future, its people and its economy."
