Jenna Head · CBC News · Posted: Jul 29, 2025 - One small step for NordSpace is one giant leap for Newfoundland and Labrador — as the aerospace company plans to launch Canada's first commercial rocket to space from the town of St. Lawrence next month. 

NordSpace founder and CEO, Rahul Goel, said the launch will be a test of the company's single-engine rocket system — a 16-meter-long rocket created using 3D-printed metal. 

"The launch this summer will be a single-engine suborbital test flight, which will be about 30 seconds," Goel told CBC's Newfoundland Morning. 

NordSpace eyed the Newfoundland town of St. Lawrence because of its position in achieving the right orbital inclinations, Goel said.

The company plans to build two launch pads, according to the town — one at Deep Cove and another along Lighthouse Road.

Ahead of the launch, a road will be built in St. Lawrence, but Goel said most of the equipment will be brought in from the company's main facility in Ontario.

"We're literally bringing our rocket, bringing our systems while the roads are being built, and it's quite a sight to see," he said.

Goel said St. Lawrence will eventually be home to a spaceport complex. 

"It's going to eventually consist of about two launch pads and ground infrastructure like radar tracking, rocket and satellite communication systems and all of that," he said.

The first test launch is scheduled to take place during the last week of August. 

While the rockets won't carry humans, they will carry payloads or small satellites into low orbit, between 500 and 1,000 kilometres into space.

"We're very excited as individuals, and as a company, to deliver what we consider a national victory for Canada," Goel said.

What is the LETL facility?

The Large Enterprise Tariff Loan (LETL) facility is a new financing facility announced by the Government of Canada on March 21, 2025. Managed by the Canada Development Investment Corporation (CDEV) through its subsidiary, Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation (CEEFC), it provides financing support for large Canadian enterprises affected by actual and potential new tariffs and countermeasures and which face challenges accessing traditional sources of market financing.

What are the eligibility criteria?

The LETL facility was created to support large Canadian companies who:

• Have an impact on Canada’s economy as a result of:
  • Significant operations in Canada; or
  • A significant workforce in Canada.
• Have approximately $300 million, or more, in annual Canadian revenue; and
• Require a minimum loan size of $60 million.
  

The LETL facility is intended for large Canadian businesses that are otherwise viable prior to the tariffs and countermeasures. It is not intended to resolve insolvencies or support businesses that have filed for relief or protection under the Companies’ Creditor Agreement Act (Canada), or any other similar legislation of any jurisdiction.

February 25, 2022 - On the evening of Feb. 24, the Second World War-era hangar at Mohawk Airfield, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, Ontario, was involved in a major structural fire and destroyed completely.

The airfield is used by the First Nations Technical Institute (FNTI) for its aviation program — the only post-secondary Indigenous aviation program of its kind in Canada. The program offers “hands-on flight training for students interested in pursuing a pilot’s license or working in the aviation industry,” according to the FNTI website.

Multiple fire departments arrived on scene at 314 Airport Road at around 11 p.m. local time on Feb. 24. Efforts to extinguish the fire continued through the night and into Friday morning.

The hangar, which was built in 1943, was made of heavy timber due to the period it was built in, and therefore burned quickly.

According to Cathie Findlay, government relations and communications director at FNTI, the entire fleet of 13 aircraft was lost in the fire — five of which were recently purchased. The aircraft maintenance operations office and equipment used to service the planes were also destroyed.

The damage is estimated to be tens of millions of dollars.

In a Facebook post, FNTI said “all staff and students were successfully evacuated from the premises and no injuries were reported.” Everyone has been accounted for.

The buildings adjacent to the hangar, which include the student residence, aviation simulator building, and Indigenous learning center, were impacted by the heat from the blaze, but no serious damage has been reported.

The nine students living in the residence building are currently being housed in a local hotel, and “all available services are being offered to the students at this time,” FNTI said in a statement.

“While this is a devastating loss to our community and it means that our program will pause temporarily, we are already looking at recovery options,” the statement continued. “FNTI would like to thank all our partners for the tremendous outpouring of support. We look forward to working with all of you to help us rebuild this program.”

GAMA Publishes Second Quarter 2021 Aircraft Shipments and Billings Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On September 1, 2021, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) released its report of general aviation aircraft shipments and billings through the second quarter of 2021. Piston, turboprop, business jet and helicopter deliveries increased across all segments during the first six months of 2021 as compared to the same period of 2020.

“Through the first six months of 2021, we can see that the industry continues to progress in its recovery efforts. While it is encouraging to see segments improve from 2020, we still trail when compared to how the industry was faring before the onset of the pandemic. Efforts to address ongoing supply chain issues, strengthen our workforce and enhance environmental sustainability will continue to be at the forefront as interest and demand for aircraft remains robust,” said GAMA President and CEO Pete Bunce.

Aircraft shipments through the second quarter of 2021, when compared to the same period in 2020, saw piston airplane deliveries increase 12.3%, with 565 units; turboprop airplane deliveries increase 45.4%, with 221 units; and business jet deliveries increase 8.2%, with 264 units. The value of airplane deliveries through the second quarter of 2021 was $8.6 billion, an increase of approximately 9.4%.

Turbine helicopter deliveries through the second quarter of 2021, when compared to the same period in 2020, saw an increase of 33%, with 258 units; and piston helicopter deliveries saw an increase of 31.7%, with 83 units.

May 26, 2021 – Ottawa – Organizations and individuals that require access to goods or technology with a military or national security significance have to register in Public Services and Procurement Canada’s Controlled Goods Program to lawfully examine, possess or transfer controlled goods in Canada.

In the fall of 2021, Public Services and Procurement Canada will begin the release of its new, secure, web-based Integrated Real-time Industrial Security (IRIS) Portal that will make registration and other processes for the Controlled Goods Program simpler and more efficient.

The Controlled Goods Program will release new features gradually to help users become familiar with the portal, and support will be available before the launch and throughout the transition.

The federal government has issued an Invitation to Qualify for the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) Strategic Tanker Transport Capability (STTC) project. This project, which is part of Strong, Secure, Engaged, seeks to replace and renew Canada's air-to-air refueling capability.
