We are proud to present the new partnership between BDC and CARIC geared to helping Canadian SMEs in the aerospace industry. By providing advisory services to help businesses upgrade to innovative business models, their program can help effectively navigate industry changes and accelerate the successful commercialization of new technologies. Representatives from both organizations will explain the program, the benefits and the associated funding.
Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) will present their new Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program which will launch a number of coordinated initiatives that will transform the way the Department of National Defence (DND) generates solutions to complex problems. Through IDEaS, DND will invest $1.6 billion over the next 20 years to support:
- Creating clusters of defence innovators to conduct leading-edge research and development in areas critical to future defence needs. These clusters will bring together academics, industry and other partners to form collaborative innovation networks;
- Holding competitions that invite innovators to present viable solutions to specific defence and security challenges; and
- Implementing flexible new procurement mechanisms that allow Defence to develop and test ideas and the ability to follow through on the most promising ones with procurement.
We shall learn how the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) allocates repayable and non-repayable contributions to firms of all sizes across all of Canada's industrial and technology sectors. The program has a budget of $1.26 billion over five years. It consolidates and simplifies the Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative, Technology Demonstration Program, Automotive Innovation Fund and Automotive Supplier Innovation Program. The goal is to attract and support new high-quality business investments and accelerate areas of economic strength, strengthen and expand the role of Canadian firms in regional and global supply chains, support economic strategies, and attract investment that creates new, good, well-paying jobs.

Do you have an innovative product or service that you want to get to market? Created to bolster innovation in Canada, the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP) helps companies bridge the pre-commercialization gap by procuring and testing late stage innovative goods and services within the federal government before taking them to market. The Office of Small and Medium Enterprises will present this now permanent Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) procurement program with a budget of $30 million for 2016-2017.
